Midstate will receive $21,000 under the grant The grant will fund 1998-99 implementation of the "Protecting Workers Who Exercise Rights" (PWWER) project. The PWWER project is designed to provide workers with information, materials, training and education aimed at increasing understanding of ieheacerightsetoscall efor OSHACinspectomsr mito accompany inspectors during an inspection; and to be protected in cases where employers retaliate against workers who exercise their rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Act. "It is outrageous that many workers work under unsafe conditions because they either are unaware of their rights to call for an OSHA inspection, or because they are afraid of employer retaliation," said Mike Oates, President of the Midstate Labor Council. "The educational materials and training we will provide workers under this grant will help remedy this problem." In addition to producing a factsheet on workers’ rights under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Midstate CLC will conduct a series of training programs in Tompkins, Cortland, Schuyler, Steuben and Chemung Counties for workers, including workers of color, teens and immigrant workers.
