State Street Ithaca, N.Y. 14850 July 19, 1985 Dear Brothers and Sisters, As you know Local 2300 of the United Auto Workers is currently negotiating to renew its contract with Cornell University which expired June 30. Bargaining is progressing on some issues, but we would like you to know that the UAW is facing a strike situation in the very near future. The major issues yet unsettled are economic. Cornell is offering 30 cent an hour raises in each of 3 years.. Contrast this with the facts that 200 UAW members live below the federal poverty level and similiar universities (Ivy League, etc.) have starting wages $3,000-$6,000 over Cornell's scale. The union is determined to make significant gains. This is a struggle that is important to all of us. Cornell is the major employer in this area; wage standards are set by the university and many in the building trades work there. For these reasons the Tompkins Cortland Labor Coalition is setting up a contigency strike fund. Please consider making a dona- tion as soon as possible. If the UAW doesn't have to strike Cornel] the fund will be maintained to support other members who face strikes in the future.
