To all Labor Coalition Members:

The other side of this page is a summary of our Plant Closing Legislation - now
titled Advance Notice Legislation. In April we jumped the final hurdle before Common
Council. We are looking for passage by July. Please acquaint yourself and your Local
with this important matter.

Voted on and passed at the April meeting was a Restlution on South Africa: "The
Tompkins-Cortland Labor Coalition, recognizing the injustices suffered by the workers in
South Africa who are systematically exploited by private interests and subjected to the
“evil of government-enforced apartheid, supports all groups and individuals who, through
acts of conscience, work actively to protest American business snd government complicity
in South African apartheid. Through this Resolution we call for total divestment from
South Africa of all U.S. multi-national corporations in concert with identical demands
made by the South African Labor Movement as represented by the Council of Unions of
South Africa and the Federation of South African Trade Unions."

Approved at the April meeting was a suggestion that the Coalition meet six times a
year instead of the current twelve. These six meetings would be in addition to the
Labor Day Rally, the Christmas Party, and the annual meeting with the government repre-
sentatives. The Steering Committee would continue to meet once a month and emergency

meetings could be called at any tims. A final vote on this motion will take place at the

next meeting. Proposed meetings will be: February, March, April, May, June, Labor Day

Rally in September, October meeting with elected officials, November, and the Christmas

Party in December.

Nominations received for Steering Committee members at the April meeting were: Oze

Richardson, Sue Pentecost-Wall, Tom Joyce, Skye Milliman, Jim Morrissette, Nancy VanOrman,
Jim Nichols, Carl Feuer, Charles French, Tom Keane, Cal Bailey, Etta Gray, and Bernie

Van Orman. Nominations will also be opened prior to elections at the next meeting.

Finally, the Coalition voted to endorse the 12th World Festival of Youth and Students
to be held this summer in Moscow, USSR.

NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING: TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 7:00 P.M., PLUMBERS AND PIPEFITTERS
HALL, 701 WEST STATE STREET, ITHSCA.

STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING: TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 6 P.M.
