PRESER Wa fi RN ORIGINAL DESTROYED & April 24, 1990 Clarence Rappleyea 122nd Assembly District LOB Room 993 Albany, NY 12248 Dear Mr. Rappleyea, Enclosed please find a copy of a letter which has been sent to Richard Tupper, Chair of the Cortland County Legislature regarding the layoff of workers at Smith Corona. At this time, this is just for your information. However, our organization may be contacting you in the near future about our concerns that Smith Corona may have violated the federal plant closing law. In any case, the situation at Smith Corona points up the need for stronger plant closing and mass layoff legislation in New York State. The vast majority of workers were given no notification about their layoffs and those that did get notification had only a few days to prepare. The right to be informed about your employment prospects seems only fair. We hope you will contact us if you have any questions regarding our informal investigation. Sincerely, Coert Bonthius Coordinator encl.

- April 24, 1990 Marty Luster 125th Assembly District 106 EE. Court St. Ithaca, NY 14850 Dear Marty, Enclosed please find a copy of a letter which has been sent to Richard Tupper, Chair of the Cortland County Legislature regarding the layoff of workers at Smith Corona. At this time, this is just for your information. However, we may be contacting you in the near future about our concerns that Smith Corona may have violated the federal plant closing law. You should know that even though Smith Corona is in Cortland County a huge number of the laid off workers come from Tompkins County towns like Groton, McLean and Freeville. In any case, the situation at Smith Corona points up the need for stronger plant closing and mass layoff legislation in New York State. The vast majority of workers were given no notification about their layoffs and those that did get notification had only a few days to prepare. The right to be informed about your employment prospects seems only fair. I have been in touch with Frank Barbaro's office already. He is interested in helping us investigate the situation. It clearly can be used as support for stronger New York State legislation. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding our informal investigation. Sincerely, Coert Bonthius Coordinator encl.
