Dear Ms. Eckhaus,

The Tompkins/Cortland Labor Coalition serves as a central
labor council for unions in a two county area surrounding Ithaca,
NY. Unlike other labor councils ours works diligently on behalf
of organized and unorganized workers. In keeping with this
commitment we have initiated assistance to more than 750
unorganized workers who are pursuing a lawsuit against the Smith-
Corona Machine (SCM) Corporation for violations of the WARN law.

The Maurice and Jane Sugar Law Center for Economic and
Social Justice has been integral to our efforts to date in terms
of legal advice and networking. Given the fact that most of the
workers effected by the layoffs at SCM and the fact that they
have no union to represent them it is extremely difficult for
them to pursue this legal action alone. Likewise the Labor
Coalition does not have the financial where with all to
adequately assist them.

It is clear that without continued assistance from the
Center these workers will have to relinquish their rights under
WARN. We look forward to financial aid and legal back up from
the Center to ensure that these workers and their families will
not be abandoned in their quest for justice.

Thank you for your concern and interest in our case.
Sincer@ly,

Coert Bonthius, Coordinator
